Caregiver Guidelines for Safe Mobility Support

Disclaimer: This guide is for educational purposes only. If your loved one requires maximum physical assistance, has orthopedic precautions, or has a history of severe falls, consult a physical therapist for hands-on transfer safety training.

General Guidelines for Caregivers

Assisting a loved one with transfers can be physically demanding. Protecting your own body mechanics is critical to prevent spinal strain while maximizing their independence.

1. Prioritize Clear Communication

Always explain what you are about to do before touching your loved one. Clear instructions help reduce anxiety and increase active cooperation.

2. Use Proper Body Mechanics

Keep your back straight, bend at your knees and hips (do not bend from the waist), and avoid twisting motions while supporting weight.

3. Encourage Participation

Allow them to do as much of the movement as they are physically able to do. Do not take over unless necessary; active movement preserves their strength.

4. Safe Footwear Only

Ensure both you and your loved one are wearing supportive, non-slip rubber shoes. Avoid socks, open-back slippers, or flip-flops during transfers.
